In Ilonggo, Balay Dako means "big house." This is another Antonio Group's pride in Tagaytay--- after perfecting the craft of serving breakfasts.

Balay Dako as depicted in the menu cover
Balay Dako is patterned from the traditional bahay na bato. As lush as the greeneries, the house is painted green. Upon entering, a Welcome Home signage greets. It's really like coming back home, only circa 1900 with matching baro't saya

Oh, there's home :)

Everywhere, they welcome
On the left side is the Balay Dako Deli. Straight ahead is the komedor. The feel is very classic Filipino. But what it probably has that the early Filipinos didn't--- the majestic view of Taal. It perfects the overall ambiance of Balay Dako.

Awesome view!
Their second-floor landing is a different story to describe. Downstairs is very classic while upstairs has a bit of an old bar feeling: wines decked the walls, large chandeliers, stone walls, huge windows and wooden tables and chairs.

I wonder how this will look like on a sunny day...

Sorry to be modeling instead of eating :p
What I love most is Balay Dako's terrace... the al fresco chairs amidst the hanging vines... the clover-shaped railings... it was dire cold to stay outside but the view and the setting just so relaxing. This time, Taal volcano is unobstructed.

Love this part :)
Going back to the komedor (where the food awaits, of course), this table with the condiments greets.

Komedor condiments
On the tables, so-Filipino are condiments again-- with sliced pepper, garlic, onions etc. Seeing those enhance the appetite already!
  • Bulalo na Baka at Php 840. Clear broth of beef shanks, Chinese cabbage, string beans and blackened onions.

Always, says Tagaytay
balay dako tagaytay condiments blackened onions
Now I realized, I should've bought...
The bulalo itself was bland...but, there comes the aromatic blackened onion! I added a few teaspoon to suit my liking and it enhanced the flavor.
  • Laing na Gabi at Tokwa at Php 280. Taro leaves and braised coconut milk.

Healthy choice here
I love laing! I could've wanted it creamier with coconut milk.
  • Kare-kare Klasik at Php 570. Ox cheeks, tripe and meat stewed in peanut puree sauce with eggplant, Chinese cabbage and string beans.

More veggies, please
It doesn't look as appetizing but it is good.
  • Sizzling Bulalo na Baka at Php 920. Braised beef shank smothered in a mushroom sauce and served on a sizzling cast iron platter.

Favorite :)
Now this one's unique... and what topped the list. The sauce, with beef, with fried potatoes... it was all too powerful! I enjoyed every bite!
  • Inihaw na Liempo at Php 290.
balay dako tagaytay liempo
It should be good anyway, it's expensive for a piece of meat
This one is good, too! No need for the sauce, actually.
  • Inihaw na Pusit at Php 335

Never go wrong when it's fresh
Surprisingly, this one is cool, too. Just plain goodness.

With this, it calls for a celebration! I like the concept of adding blackened onion to suit one's taste though I just figured it out on my own. No one told us.

Overall, it was a good dining experience. Thumbs-up, Antonio's!

Undeniably, Bag of Beans has carved a name when you mention "Tagaytay." Even years back, it's already known to offer good bread in a relaxing backdrop.

This is homey enough.
When in doubt, just notice the four branches that they already have, all along Tagaytay-Nasugbu road. Wherever you're at, I'm sure the goodness of the original branch will transcend from among.

It's all about the chandelier
So! It was a nippy night and Bag of Beans was just so perfect. Although at this time, no more view of the majestic Taal volcano, the ambience was still great, coupled of course with a hot mug and sweets to enjoy by...

  • Blueberry Cheesecake at Php 160. It was generously lavished with blueberry and it was good. Cheesecake part was as delectable as ever.

  • Apple Pie at Php 145. Crunchy on the outside, steaming hot inside. I'm not a fan of apple pie but definitely way better than McDo's. Hahaha.

Apple of my pie :)
  • Pannacotta at Php 120. OMG, lovely to look at especially with that cherry on top. And it's not that sweet.

The cherry on top nailed it
  • Shepherd's Pie at Php 150. Now, this one's my favorite. After all those sweetness, this savory dessert is a nice break. I so love that it's beefy. Pair it with rice? Haha.

Meaty for the meaty lover
Through all these, had my cuppa Hot Chocolate at Php 135. Real tablea goodness! Be warned those looking for hot Chuckie! Though I'm a baby I could've enjoyed it Chuckie-like. Haha.

Bag of Beans has a branch in:

E. Aguinaldo Highway,
Silang Junction East,
Tagaytay City
Quirky. Mystical. Magical.

The mystic logo
If you're a Harry Potter fan, dining at Mystic Brew feels like you're in one of the restaurants in Hogsmeade. The place is strongly Harry Potter-ish and a mishmash of other 'magical' concepts, even some Gingerbread house since it's Christmastime.

Of butter beers (and oh yes they have that in their menu!)

Even their menu is a concoction of sorts. They have pasta, burgers and sandwiches, desserts, and of course coffees.

Take your mystic ending
Tried their Mystic Burger at Php 180. It's supposed to be in a bun, but that late night, they ran out of it so offered instead bread in lieu of it. Not having so much choice, said yes. Added Php 20 for french fries.

Ooopps, they ran out of bun. Asiwassayin.
All things considered, I felt that Php 180 (plus 20) is quite high for a small burger (the patty was just a stubby version of my fist).

Also tried Bowl-over-Bolognese at Php 180. It was meaty, yes, but it's weird it's not so tasty and saucy (a personal preference, anyway).

In a kind-of-a-bowl, indeed
Overall, the place is in its own way, unique: a good place to chill, too. Food isn't entirely bad but there are just some points that can be improved to make the mystic experience better. Just sayin'.

Finding Tonkatsuya was a challenge. Even when we were told that it's in Palm Tower, we had to look once over because it's at the basement. But it was worth the hassle as it's a gem restaurant in Makati.

The place was very unassuming; only manga series adorned their walls. Their patrons were mostly Japanese. Didn't put my expectations high even though it's included in Spot.ph's Top 10 Tonkatsu in Manila

Way of saying 'welcome'

Then you can spend the afternoon here with these
Upon order, we were served with cold tea. The usual set would include miso soup plus in Tonkatsuya, there's a bean sprout side dish and a bowl of rice. First time I went there, I ordered Cheese Katsu Set at Php 260 because I was craving for something like Ichiro's in Taft. Funny thing is, their cheese katsu was regular tonkastu topped with melted cheese. Ichiro's was better of course that it melts in the mouth. But Tonkatsuya's wasn't bad either; it was acceptably good.

Cheesy without you....
Yes it was that I visited again. Second time around, ordered Tonkatsu Set at Php 220. It wasn't as soft but it's tasty and not so oily. A good way to end it was their sliced cabbage (not unlimited, of course). Just had to pay additional for Japanese mayo or Kewpie sauce.

In my two visits, walked out full and happy. Cheap yet good food. Nice combination. Service time was also acceptable for a 1-hour break.

Still in Coron series: 2nd time around food trip edition!

After enjoying my coffee in Coffee Kong, had the chance to go a bit farther because TripAdvisor recommended in its top 10 list, Santino's Grill. We had to take a tricycle and traveled 20-30 minutes away. Trike drivers didn't even know it except when they were informed that it's near where the cheap cashews are bought.

Love the natural feeling
Santino's Grill is an alfresco restaurant complimentary to its Filipino-interior theme. I love it inside although I could've appreciated it more in daylight. :)

When in this restaurant, Baby Back Ribs (half-slab/ full-slab) at Php 300/ 500 is a must. Said yes to mashed potato instead of rice. The mashed potato was good! Baby back ribs was in a generous serving but it's a bit sweet for my liking. But it has to be said that the ribs were cooked well: tender and good.

Hi there, baby!
Also had Bulalo perfect for a nippy night in Coron. Their Bulalo is okay but not as good as that in Tagaytay. It's good to note the generous serving, though.

Name the top 10 restaurants to visit in Binondo and one name that would pop up is Wai Ying. Not only that! In search for the mouthwatering hakaw, it also ranks high.

Binondo though is crowded. For a quick dim sum treat, Wai Ying Taft is on the rescue!

The location of Wai Ying is noticeable and it has a relatively big area. However, it's untidy. Consistent probably with Binondo?

Despite that impression, went on to order Hakaw at Php 80. As always, it comes in four (4) pcs. The taste is okay though the texture of its skin is slightly grainy. I imagine it to be soft and succulent but not.

Shrimp be with you!
The main thing is Beef Noodles at Php 120. Serving is generous. Beef and vegetables come in heaps. To top it off, it tastes good (and hot for the tummy!).

In trying restaurants along Taft, there will be a fair share of disappointments. Don't fret, this isn't one of them. I can pay a visit just when I need a trusted bowl of soup.
