In Ilonggo, Balay Dako means "big house." This is another Antonio Group's pride in Tagaytay--- after perfecting the craft of serving breakfasts.

Balay Dako is patterned from the traditional bahay na bato. As lush as the greeneries, the house is painted green. Upon entering, a Welcome Home signage greets. It's really like coming back home, only circa 1900 with matching baro't saya

Oh, there's home :)

Everywhere, they welcome
On the left side is the Balay Dako Deli. Straight ahead is the komedor. The feel is very classic Filipino. But what it probably has that the early Filipinos didn't--- the majestic view of Taal. It perfects the overall ambiance of Balay Dako.

Awesome view!
Their second-floor landing is a different story to describe. Downstairs is very classic while upstairs has a bit of an old bar feeling: wines decked the walls, large chandeliers, stone walls, huge windows and wooden tables and chairs.

I wonder how this will look like on a sunny day...

Sorry to be modeling instead of eating :p
What I love most is Balay Dako's terrace... the al fresco chairs amidst the hanging vines... the clover-shaped railings... it was dire cold to stay outside but the view and the setting just so relaxing. This time, Taal volcano is unobstructed.

Love this part :)
Going back to the komedor (where the food awaits, of course), this table with the condiments greets.

On the tables, so-Filipino are condiments again-- with sliced pepper, garlic, onions etc. Seeing those enhance the appetite already!
  • Bulalo na Baka at Php 840. Clear broth of beef shanks, Chinese cabbage, string beans and blackened onions.

Always, says Tagaytay
balay dako tagaytay condiments blackened onions
Now I realized, I should've bought...
The bulalo itself was bland...but, there comes the aromatic blackened onion! I added a few teaspoon to suit my liking and it enhanced the flavor.
  • Laing na Gabi at Tokwa at Php 280. Taro leaves and braised coconut milk.

Healthy choice here
I love laing! I could've wanted it creamier with coconut milk.
  • Kare-kare Klasik at Php 570. Ox cheeks, tripe and meat stewed in peanut puree sauce with eggplant, Chinese cabbage and string beans.

More veggies, please
It doesn't look as appetizing but it is good.
  • Sizzling Bulalo na Baka at Php 920. Braised beef shank smothered in a mushroom sauce and served on a sizzling cast iron platter.

Favorite :)
Now this one's unique... and what topped the list. The sauce, with beef, with fried potatoes... it was all too powerful! I enjoyed every bite!
  • Inihaw na Liempo at Php 290.

It should be good anyway, it's expensive for a piece of meat
This one is good, too! No need for the sauce, actually.
  • Inihaw na Pusit at Php 335

Never go wrong when it's fresh
Surprisingly, this one is cool, too. Just plain goodness.

With this, it calls for a celebration! I like the concept of adding blackened onion to suit one's taste though I just figured it out on my own. No one told us.

Overall, it was a good dining experience. Thumbs-up, Antonio's!

Aguinaldo High-way,
Tagaytay City
Undeniably, Bag of Beans has carved a name when you mention "Tagaytay." Even years back, it's already known to offer good bread in a relaxing backdrop.

This is homey enough.
When in doubt, just notice the four branches that they already have, all along Tagaytay-Nasugbu road. Wherever you're at, I'm sure the goodness of the original branch will transcend from among.

It's all about the chandelier
So! It was a nippy night and Bag of Beans was just so perfect. Although at this time, no more view of the majestic Taal volcano, the ambience was still great, coupled of course with a hot mug and sweets to enjoy by...

  • Blueberry Cheesecake at Php 160. It was generously lavished with blueberry and it was good. Cheesecake part was as delectable as ever.

  • Apple Pie at Php 145. Crunchy on the outside, steaming hot inside. I'm not a fan of apple pie but definitely way better than McDo's. Hahaha.

Apple of my pie :)
  • Pannacotta at Php 120. OMG, lovely to look at especially with that cherry on top. And it's not that sweet.

The cherry on top nailed it
  • Shepherd's Pie at Php 150. Now, this one's my favorite. After all those sweetness, this savory dessert is a nice break. I so love that it's beefy. Pair it with rice? Haha.

Through all these, had my cuppa Hot Chocolate at Php 135. Real tablea goodness! Be warned those looking for hot Chuckie! Though I'm a baby I could've enjoyed it Chuckie-like. Haha.

Bag of Beans has a branch in:

E. Aguinaldo Highway,
Silang Junction East,
Tagaytay City
If there's an Italian restaurant I'd travel far to, it should be the hard-to-pronounce-hard-to-remember Friuli Trattoria in Maginhawa, QC. Though it's quite a sweat summoning up its name, what I cannot forget is its authentic taste at an awesome price!

Ready to choose!
I cry as we don't have something similar in the South (or prolly I'm not privy to it). Anyhow, I enjoyed as much as I can, with good friends to boot, at this side of Maginhawa.

The place is very simple. No frills. But don't underestimate their menu. They only have a single published size for the pizza, and got to choose two (2) flavors:
  • Viva Venezia at Php 220, their bestseller with lean ground beef, olives, mushrooms, green bell peppers and onions.
  • All Meat at Php 250,  with lean ground beef, ham, pepperoni and Italian sausage.

Viva Venezia x All Meat
Both were good! But I enjoyed Viva Venezia more. Also ordered Spaghetti with Tuna and Mushroom at Php 120. At this price, it's already a plateful! Their spaghetti had water on the pasta when they served it, but surprisingly it was still good. I don't know if that's how it's really served. Nevertheless, it did not disappoint.

Creamy, even from the photo
Can't wait for them to branch out :P But before they do, here's part of their menu:

Friuli Trattoria is located at:

79-A Maginhawa Street,
Teachers Village
Quezon City
Opening 2016 with a sweet indulgence in the north! Maginhawa Street is known to be a haven for food lovers (not to mention that food-hopping wouldn't break the bank), it's where even a Southerner cannot resist. Glad to share this with highschool buddies!

Well, Papa Diddi's wasn't our initial choice for desserts but Iscreamist was closed. Apparently, they ran out of nitrogen. Looking back, it's good they did. Got to experience the fresh and unadulterated goodness of Papa Diddi's (reminds me so much of Mad Mark's honest ice cream)!

Papa Diddi's Maginhawa menu
More to choose than just ice cream :)
Aside from learning that their ice creams are made fresh everyday, they also have a CSR initiative called SCOOP (we support communities out of poverty), where they will donate educational materials to public school where they source out their materials from local farmers.

Papa Diddi's Maginhawa ice cream selection
Having a hard time choosing? They'll give free taste. Yey!
Papa Diddi's Maginhawa quality notice
Their kind-of quality seal
That explains why the interior of Papa Diddi's is like a library: with books on the shelves and as accent to the lights!

Papa Diddi's Maginhawa interior
I love books! And ice cream, too!
With all these goodness we were getting from this place, we happily went for an Indulgence at Php 99. An indulgence means we get to choose three (3) flavors of their homemade ice cream so chose the ff:
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly
  • Tres Leches
  • Tsokolate de Cagayan
Papa Diddi's Maginhawa indulgence
Three's a charm :)
All were brimming with flavor! I love the right taste of the peanut butter & jelly. Tsokolate de Cagayan has that perfect balance of sweetness. But what captured my heart prolly is Tres Leches.

So, what can I say? A responsible company that offers true-goodness desserts, I must say, guys (especially those living in the north), let's always go for Papa Diddi's! Besides, their prices are very reasonable. Way to go, Papa Diddi's!

Rio Japanese and Korean restaurant is now in BF Resort (from BF Parañaque), Las Piñas. We, Southerners, now have a new place to chill.

Rio's logo is orange. Maybe that explains why the place radiates with so much orangeness (see pictures). The place is simple, not so many decors. But what I love about this new joint is their vast offerings: from Korean to Japanese. Nice!

As with any Korean restaurant, they also offer complimentary appetizers: dilis. (During my first time, they even had peanuts). Anyway, what enticed me to go back is their cool and yummy selection of makis.

So what's the English translation?
Crazy Maki at Php 160 for 8pcs has a crunchiness I love! I don't know where it came from. All I know is, I'm enjoying every bite.

rio japanese and korean restaurant bf resort crazy maki
Crazy about it!!! :)
Sunset Boulevard at Php 230 for 8 pcs is spectacular, too! I'm assuming the pink ingredient on top is cotton candy. Weird as it may sound, it added a whimsical overall taste.

I wanna eat it sunset until day!
Top it all off, their maki price range won't break the bank!

Katsudon at Php 190 is just on the ordinary. Not lamentable but nothing special, either.

All rice, then!
Although the service's a bit slow, I'd go for another round of their makis again!

And hey, take a glimpse of their menu, here:
